Acrylic Paint Palettes: Paper, Reusable or Wet?

Compare disposable palette paper, reusable mixing surfaces and wet palettes for acrylic painting. Choose by session length, cleanup and mixing space.

The right acrylic paint palette depends on how long you work, how you mix and how you want to clean up. Disposable palette paper gives you a replaceable surface. A reusable palette gives you a surface to clean and use again. A wet palette adds a moisture supply intended to help keep paint workable. These are different tools, even when all three have a lid.

Start with your painting session

Before comparing products, think about a normal session. Do you squeeze out a few small mixtures and finish quickly? Do you revisit the same colours during a longer piece? Do you use a palette knife, a fine brush or a broad brush? The answer affects the useful mixing area and whether moisture management matters to you.

Try sketching the colour layout you need on a sheet of paper. Leave room between the unmixed colours and your active mixtures. This makes the size decision more concrete than choosing a palette only by its outside dimensions.

Disposable palette paper: a replaceable mixing surface

Purpose-made palette paper sits on a backing board, tray or insert. At the end of the session, you can remove the used sheet according to the paint and paper maker’s disposal instructions. It can suit painters who prefer a fresh surface without cleaning dried mixtures from the backing itself.

Check the sheet size, how it is secured and whether its edges interfere with a lid. Keep the backing dry unless the system is designed for moisture. Ordinary sketchbook paper is not automatically a substitute for palette paper: absorbency and surface behaviour differ.

The trade-off is a supply of replacement sheets and a plan for used materials. A dry sheet does not continuously feed moisture to the paint, and putting a lid over it does not turn it into a stay-wet system.

Reusable palettes: choose around cleaning and handling

A reusable surface can suit a repeatable studio setup. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your paint, palette material and cleaning method. Consider the edges, grip and weight as well as the mixing area. If a palette knife is part of your routine, verify that the surface is suitable for it.

A useful habit is to clear paint from tools before it dries. Liquitex’s storage and disposal guidance recommends wiping tools and palettes during cleanup. Follow the product instructions for handling residues and cleaning water.

Wet palettes: a moisture system, not just a lid

A purpose-designed wet palette usually combines a water reservoir or damp sponge with compatible permeable paper. Masterson describes its Sta-Wet system as using a wet sponge and special paper to supply moisture to paint. The important distinction is that mechanism, rather than the presence of a cover.

Follow the system’s preparation and maintenance instructions. Use the specified consumables and check how your chosen paint behaves before relying on it for a large piece. A wet palette may be useful for longer sessions, but it also adds preparation and maintenance to your routine.

Where the We Glow Up insert fits

Our Acrylic and Complete launch-preview kits include an insert that backs a disposable paper palette. It is not a stay-wet palette. Those kits use a matching acrylic-compatible lid; an insert alone will not fit the low-profile lid supplied with Core or Field. An upgrade requires both matching parts, subject to fit approval.

Paper, tape and paint are not included, and compatible paper size is confirmed before launch. Payment and reservations remain closed. See the palette kit comparison for current details, then use our small-space setup checklist to decide where the palette and cleanup materials will live.
